The Whole Scoop:

The Yak Academy provides a fun, developmentally appropriate environment where a child can learn a foreign language at his or her own pace. Through play and interactive activities, children are immersed in an environment where they’re interested and engaged. These practical situations, like playing a familiar game or eating a snack, help them learn what the experts refer to as ‘functional language chunks.’ In fact, immersion students reach higher levels of language proficiency than students in other school-based language programs. It is language learning made fun! Classes meet 1-2 times per week for 60-75 minutes each class.

Parent-Tot classes are offered in February with your CircleBuzz certificate and are geared towards 1-3 year olds. Little ones are energetic and quite curious, which is why parent or caregiver participation is a must! Together you’ll experience song, movement, use of ‘choice’ questions and short phrases that your child will best relate to and comprehend.

*Parent/tot classes schedule:
- Mandarin class: Fridays 9:30-10:30am on 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24
- Spanish class: Saturdays 9:15-10:15am on 2/4, 2/11, 2/18, 2/25

Beyond the joy of learning, a second language provides the ultimate developmental and competitive edge for your child. When a child learns a foreign language, it also helps improve their English vocabulary, understanding, speech, reading, and overall language proficiency. Why start early? Children’s brains are naturally primed to acquire any language effortlessly from birth to age 6. As we get older, it becomes a laborious task instead of the easy, natural process it is for kids. Children are also born with a natural ability to acquire language simply through hearing and use. This ability all but disappears by the age of 13. Additionally, learning a second language is good for the brain! Studies have found that children who study another language score higher on standardized tests in math, verbal skills, social studies, and SATs. It also boosts creativity, self-esteem, listening skills and better vocabulary in a child’s native tongue.
